The number of New Year gigs by Bollywood stars has fallen drastically this time around

The hospitality industry is clearing feeling the economic pinch. As opposed to the usual brouhaha of stars performing at high-end events, the arrival of 2014 (read: parties) seem to lack the big names from showbiz.

Barring Priyanka Chopra, not a single A-list actor will be seen performing on New Year's Eve. Not very long ago, names like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu were much in demand at December 31 bashes. As of today, Kat and Bebo rather prefer to spend time with their respective partners.

So, are the stars not interested in moolah anymore as it's often said that they tend to pocket quite a lot from shows while they aren't shooting? Turns out there are many reasons at play.

Veena Vachani, a wedding planner and event manager, says the supply and demand isn't as big an issue as the price quoted for performances. `Several Bollywood stars have hiked their price up to three times their previous cost and organisers just cannot afford that kind of budgets anymore.`


Malaika Arora Khan, who performed at Aamby Valley two years ago, falls in the same category.

Veena adds, `There were enquires from one of my clients, but the kind of money the actors are asking is simply unaffordable. And they don't want lesser known artistes for New Year's Eve.`

Besides, actors now have other avenues to make money like television shows, award function and endorsements. A well-placed source says, `The money they earn from other options is much more than these shows. After the Mallika Sherawat controversy when she was slapped with an obscenity case after a year-end show, stars have got a bit wary.`

It appears that the stars prefer to be on a holiday with their partners and family rather than perform. There might be a bigger catalyst behind the change though. A Mumbai-based photographer, who has been covering such events, informs, `The fear of backlash from society and moral police may have scared the actors. Otherwise, why would they leave the money, especially actresses, who earn less than their male counterparts?`


An interesting development has taken place with regards to singers as well. The crooning lot doesn't really have that much work during New Year's Eve. `Last year, Yo Yo Honey Singh's show was cancelled after a police case was filed against him for allegedly singing vulgar songs. Tonight, however he has a show lined up. Rapper Hard Kaur will be performing at Rajkot,` says a source.

A person associated with event management tells us on conditions of anonymity that an actor with back-to-back releases is ignoring their company's request repeatedly. `We tried getting in touch with him but he's currently in the US chilling -- the same person who was chasing us not too long ago for shows. This is definitely a paradigm shift not only in his but also peers' attitude towards year-ender shows.`

Hrithik, Kareena to sport two different looks in 'Shuddhi'..

Director Karan Malhotra's film Shuddhi may take another six months to go on the floors, but it is learnt that Hrithik Roshan has two looks in the film. Reason? The film is about reincarnation.

A source close to the unit says, `The film spans different periods and Hrithik has a '60s look as well as that of today. Even Kareena Kapoor has two distinct looks.'' Producer Karan Johar had reportedly stated that it is a period love story.


The looks of the stars will be designed by Manish Malhotra. The source adds, `The film will be shot in and around Mumbai.'' The film was set to go on the floors in December, but due to Hrithik's health and personal issues it has been pushed to July 2014.

The film also has Pankaj Kapur essaying the villain. Incidentally, Bebo and Duggu come together in a film after a decade.

Kajol not on Chopras' list (September 23)

Kajol was supposed to attend the event where nine of Chopra's heroines walked on the ramp. But she did not receive any formal invite to the bash and did not appear for the show at all. Insiders say the reason behind meting out this step-motherly treatment towards the banner's once-favourite actress is the fallout her husband Ajay Devgn had with Yash Raj Films after their films clashed at the box office last Diwali.

Sussanne's blink-and-miss act (September 9)

The celebrations around Rakesh Roshan's 64th birthday were in full swing at a Worli hotspot on Friday night. While Bollywood's who's who gathered to wish the veteran, Roshan's daughter-in-law Sussanne made a blink-and-miss appearance. Towards the end of the year, they issued different statements mentioning about their separation.

Diana Penty done with films? (July 24)

Diana Penty, who made her debut in Homi Adajania's Cocktail opposite Saif Ali Khan last year, is apparently dating diamond merchant Harsh Sagar and there were speculations that the young actress is keen on tying the knots as well.

UK rejects Salman's visa (August 2)

While the shoot of his upcoming Kick was already underway in London, the film's lead actor Salman Khan was yet to leave the Indian shores. According to well-placed sources, the star's visa had been rejected and no reason was been provided for it. Salman was supposed to start shooting his portions -- something that never happened. At least not in the United Kingdom.

Virat and Anushka, lovebirds? (November 12)

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli were spotted together at midnight in Versova and then later, the young actress was seeing planting a 'quickissie' on the celebrated cricketer. `Anushka was wearing a white t-shirt and pink trousers while Virat was casually dressed in tee and jeans. The actress saw him off in the car but not before the two shared a quick kiss,` informed an eyewitness. Both the parties denied any relationship though.

Lolo finds a special friend (August 29)

Though the actress and her husband have categorically denied the buzz about cracks in their marriage, insiders said Karisma could be trying to move on. She is said to have made new friends in Mumbai and one of them is a CEO of a health firm. The guy, a graduate from the Duke University, US, is around the same age as Karisma and the two were introduced to each other through their common social circle.

Hrithik US-bound for surgery (November 21)

According to sources, the shoot of Siddharth Anand's Bang Bang -- starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif for the first time -- was to begin from November 27. It has now been postponed to January. However, the Krrish star is said to have requested to cancel the schedule, which was a nine-day song shoot. If sources are to believed, the superstar will be going to the US for another surgery as he has had a relapse.

Salman's big television plans (December 21)

Salman Khan has been approached by Siddharth Basu's production house to bring back his popular show Dus Ka Dum through its third season. There is a strong buzz that Salman Khan and the production house Endemol -- the producer of Bigg Boss -- are having some issues with the channel on which Bigg Boss is currently broadcast. As a result of this ideological tiff, the invested parties have apparently decided to conduct the next season of the controversial reality show on another channel.

Saying yes to Dr Nene (September 13)


It's been two years since his arrival in India but surprisingly Madhuri Dixit's husband has refrained from taking up a job in Mumbai. While it set off several tongues tattling about his 'unemployed' status, Mads maintained that her husband helps her manage her work. Insiders from the medical industry, however, added that the US-trained doctor recently applied and received a license to work in the country from the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).

Salman Khan's new girl? (May 7)

Salman Khan and Iulia Vantur were seen together almost everyday at a five-star hotel at Bandstand in Bandra. The star has reportedly became serious about her and seems to be throwing caution to the wind. It has been over a year now since Salman has started dating her and this time around he is making no attempts to hide her from the public eye. DP to announce two new projects around birthday..

The New Year is yet to set in but for Deepika Padukone it already seems to be turning out well. The actress, who gave four back-to-back hits in 2013, is likely to announce two more projects around her 28th birthday.

She currently has three films - "Happy New Year", "Finding Fanny" and Imtiaz Ali's next, to look forward to next year.

"Deepika will be having special announcements around her birthday (Jan 5)," said a source close to the actress.


The past year has proven successful for the talented young lady thanks to "Race 2", "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Chennai Express" and "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela", all of which made it to the Rs.100 crore club.

She showcased a variety in her roles via each of these films, and was lauded for her versatility.

Deepika Padukone to romance Ram Charan Teja

Ram Charan Tejadebuted in Bollywood with ‘Zanjeer’ remake opposite Priyanka Chopra as the female lead. Though the film did not spell magic at the box-office, he has bagged another promising project, a periodic drama to be directed by Ashutosh Gowariker of ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’ fame.

The movie is still in the embryonic stage and speculation is high that Deepika Padukone will be roped in to play the female lead opposite Ram Charan Teja. Deepika the reigning queen of Bollywood has not yet confirmed the news and the director are on negotiations with the actress at the moment.

Meanwhile, Ram Charan Teja who is a big name down South is busy with his Southern projects for Krishna Vamsi directorial, while he is waiting for his next release ‘Yevadu’ which is slated to release on January 12.

Deepika Padukone too is busy with Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ with Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Boman Irani.

London: Singer-actress Selena Gomez apparently cancelled the Asian and Australian legs of her Stars Dance concert tour because she's been struggling since her breakup with Justin Bieber.

A source close to the star says Gomez will be relying heavily on her family and closest friends during this time, reported Showbizspy.

"Dealing with her breakup from Justin has still been affecting her and she's been in a bit of a bad place recently. Her family stepped in and basically advised her to either go to therapy or stay with them so they could watch over her. Her team agreed that family time would be best," an insider said.

Gomez was slated to kick off a 13-concert tour leg on February 1 in Perth, Australia, but issued a statement on December 20 announcing she was cancelling it.

"My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them. But it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be.
